Herbal Viagra and real Viagra

Herbal Viagras reportedly imitate the effects of real Viagra which contains the drug Sildenafil. This active ingredient is typically sold under the brand name Viagra, but there are now many others. Sildenafil is a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction amongst other things. It is unclear if it is effective for female sexual dysfunction, however. It is typically taken orally, and usually begins working in about 20 minutes. It effects last for about two hours.

Common side effects can include headaches, heartburn, and sometimes flushed skin. Caution is always advised for those who suffer cardiovascular disease. Rare but serious side effects include a prolonged erection that can lead to damage to the penis, vision problems, and hearing loss. Sildenafil should not be taken by people on nitrates such as nitroglycerin (glycerin trinitrate) because of the risk of a serious drop in blood pressure!

Sildenafil acts by blocking PDE5  — Phosphodiesterase 5 — an enzyme that promotes the breakdown of cGMP, which regulates blood flow in soft tissue. It requires Sexual arousal is required as Sildenafil is not an aphrodisiac. It also results in dilation of the blood vessels in the lungs.

The medication was accidentally discovered by Pfizer in 1989 when they were looking for a treatment for heart-related chest pains. It was approved for medical use in the United States and in the European Union in 1998. In 2017 it was the 217th most commonly prescribed medication in the USA, with more than two million prescriptions! In 2017 it became available as a generic medication after final Pfizer patents expired. In the UK it is now available over the counter.

Most of the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) in Sildenafil (Sildenafil citrate) are produced in Pfizer’s plant in County Cork, Ireland. It is Pfizer’s largest production facility outside of the US.

The Irish comedy film about Viagra

The film Holy Water (Hard Times) is a 2009 comedy directed by Tom Reeve and starring John Lynch, Linda Hamilton, Cornelius Clarke and the hard to pronounce Lochlainn O’Mearain. It tells the comedic story of a group of rascals in a rural Ireland who hijack a truck load of Viagra with a view to selling it on in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The Viagra somehow leaks into the water supply and before long the locals are all walking around with smiles on their faces. LOL.
